Prof. Fenigsen has played an integral part in Public Anthropology's online student community, showcasing the ability of Northern Arizona students to learn effective writing skills while being active global citizens. She demonstrates how combining technology with cultural concerns in academic courses positively engages students to participate in the broader world beyond their academic setting, while gaining the skills needed for a productive, active life after graduation.

Prof. Janina Fenigsen emphasizes the political economy of language, especially in postcolonial and diasporic settings. By studying the linguistic practices through which people negotiate and (re)produce social relations and cultural forms, she explores the ways language figures in the calculus of social inequalities. Her book length manuscript nearing completion, From Apartheid to Incorporation: State, Nation and Linguistic Belonging in Barbados, considers the relationship between language, colonialism, and the formation of postcolonial identities in the British West Indies. Among her varied publications is 'A Broke-up Mirror': Representing Bajan in Print," Cultural Anthropology (1999). In Fall 2012, Prof. Fenigsen was awarded the Ruth Benedict Global Citizenship Award for her exceptionally effective participation in Public Anthropology's Community Action Online Project as well her wider activities in the public sphere.
