Northern Arizona University Student Alyssa Soto was honored as a Student Support Services Participation Grant recipient at recent awards ceremony.

Alyssa Soto, a Freshman Chemistry major and a resident of Los Angeles, CA, was honored at an award ceremony, along with more than 300 other students who participated in Northern Arizona University's Student Support Services (SSS) program, for their scholastic accomplishments and participation in the SSS program.

"We are very pleased to have so many quality students in our program," said program director, Wendy Wallace. "Participants in the SSS program enter with unique challenges and we help ensure their success through coaching and mentoring. We are pleased they have made a successful transition to the university. Compared with their peers, SSS students succeed and graduate at a higher rate. This is something to celebrate."

* The Academic Achievement Award in the Student Support Services program recognized students who earned a 3.0 term GPA or maintained a 3.0 cumulative GPA after the fall 2010 term.

* Student Support Services Participation Grant recipients received up to $1,000 during this academic year for their full participation in the SSS program.

* Chi Alpha Epsilon is the national academic honor society for TRIO program participants. The federal TRIO programs are outreach and student services programs designed to identify and provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds.

* Student Support Services Student of the Year awards recognized outstanding contributions, participation, and academic achievement of seven highly accomplished program participants.

* Student Support Services graduate awards honored seniors who participated in SSS through to graduation.

Student Support Services is funded in part by the U.S. Department of Education in order to increase college retention and graduation rates for eligible NAU students who are low-income, first generation, or have documented disabilities. Participants have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with a staff member who coaches and mentors each student toward academic success. nau.edu/sss
